Capstan Group Services secured this project for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) through a sealed tender and were appointed as Principal Contractor for the scheme. The works involved the removal of asbestos corrugated cladding from the Top Store storage facility on a 24/7 operational site, followed by the installation of new insulated cladding panels.
In addition to the asbestos removal and recladding works, Capstan delivered associated builders’ works, including hack-off and renewal of existing render with a specialist Sika coating, installation of a new industrial floor screed, and replacement of the existing front roller shutter with a new electrically operated door, colour matched to the new façade.
As part of the contract requirements, Capstan was enrolled in the Considerate Constructors Scheme and subjected to an independent external audit. The project achieved an A1 Star rating for Performance Beyond Compliance, reflecting exceptional standards of site management, health and safety, and stakeholder engagement. The building was handed over snag-free and three weeks ahead of programme.
DEFRA and the Environment Agency require the highest levels of health and safety compliance, which Capstan consistently delivered through proactive site management and regular in-house H&S audits. The client praised the professionalism, communication, and coordination demonstrated throughout the project, describing it as a highlight of their project management experience.
