Capstan were appointed by the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, to refurbish Building 59, a Grade II listed structure, in preparation for the Battle of Britain anniversary. The project required a sensitive approach to preserve the building’s historic character while ensuring compliance with current building and safety regulations.
Given the significance of the building, Capstan worked closely with the client throughout the programme to ensure the refurbishment reflected the original function and heritage of Building 59. This included appointing a specialist decorator to advise on historically appropriate finishes, with a traditional British racing green selected to enhance authenticity while providing clear visual contrast for visitors.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic during the construction phase, Capstan adapted swiftly to evolving government guidance and continued to deliver the works safely and efficiently. Although the public opening was unavoidably delayed, the project was completed on programme, and the client expressed high satisfaction with the quality and sensitivity of the finished refurbishment.
