BAFTA Headquarters
Capstan Group Services were appointed by Knight Harwood to deliver extensive asbestos remediation works at the BAFTA headquarters as part of its wider refurbishment programme. Significant asbestos containing materials (ACMs), dating from a major 1970s refurbishment, were present within voids, ceilings, risers, and partitions throughout the building.
The works involved the construction and management of over 30 fully controlled enclosures across key areas including plant rooms, projection suites, the Princess Anne Auditorium, offices, restaurants, meeting rooms, circulation spaces, and Level 1 ceiling areas.
The Grade II listed building remained operational throughout, with live retail and restaurant spaces at ground level. With no on-site waste storage available, approximately 35 tonnes of contaminated material were safely removed via Piccadilly during peak tourist periods. The programme ran alongside major demolition and scaffold works, with a single shared access route for all operatives, materials, and waste.
Despite these constraints, the project was delivered on time and within budget. Additional remediation works identified during the programme were successfully incorporated within the agreed timeframe through close coordination with Knight Harwood and the wider project team.
